It's Cool To Be Square

Welcome to my stop in this Blog Hop hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Quilt.

My entry is the #Interlockedquilt by @broadclothstudio.

The rules for this blog hop were simple: "Make a project that's square shaped or has squares in the fabric."

I knew immediately what I was going to make, Broadcloth Studio released their Interlocked Quilt a few days earlier. The pattern is a modern wall hanging of 24" square, and the design really spoke out to me with the interlocked squares.

I don't have a big supply of solids, but I had the exactly right colors for this project. A light pink background fabric, light blue and dark orange/brick color for the solid squares, and navy for the striped block.

A square quilt in a cool colorway.

I quilted the mini with the walking foot, using masking tape to mark the quilting lines. The quilting was done with 50wt Aurifil thread #2423, a perfect match.

The backing fabric is a great graphic print in matching cool colors.

Needle, Paper, Scissors Challenge

October's challenge was to complete a paper pieced project, foundation or English, that was up to us. The project could be of any size.

I am very fond of foundation paper piecing in spite of all the "waste" of fabric and removing paper from the back when the project is finished. I have done quite a lot of FPP, but never as small and detailed as this. The above picture shows all the pattern parts for the project I chose; the Bitty Eagle block, a pattern by Janeen van Niekerk of Quilt Art Designs.

Everything fits in one A4 sheet of paper. The finished block is 5" square.

For the eagle I used solids in black, white and grey, and a couple of Batik Foundations. The strip set of Vintage Morris provided colors for the eyes and beak of the eagle.

Here is the resulting "portrait" of the Bald Eagle before the paper is removed. It is a bold and proud eagle; I managed to capture the perfect look in its face and eyes.

There were a lot of small pieces in this block, and it took quite a long time to make it look exactly how I wanted.

Since this is a fairly small block, I wanted to "frame" the eagle like it is hanging in a picture frame on the wall. First it got a frame of batik foundations - Bubbles Sahara all around.

I wanted to put the frame on a green wall of batik foundations Bubbles Sprout, and chose to add a shadow around the frame to enhance the eagle a little more.

I used Hobbs Thermore batting, and Aurifil thread for both piecing and quilting. The green background (or wall) is quilted with Aurifil 50 wt in 5016, and the frame with 5013 (see below). Aurifil 2370 was used in the bobbin.

I also wanted to add some thread painting to my piece, to spruce it up. Aurifil 40 wt in 2024, 2175 and 2600 was used for this. and This is the first time I have ever done thread painting. I think the eagle feather looks quite nice at the bottom of my piece.

The binding is Cherwell Copper Vintage, and it matches the fall leaves perfectly.

Here's a detailed picture of the feather, not bad for a first try of thread painting.

The finished size of my wallhanging is approx 12" x 15", and now I just have to find a place for it on my wall.

Thanks to Island Batik, Aurifil and Hobbs for providing fabric, thread and batting for this project.

Island Batik Ambassador Great Outdoors Blog Hop and Giveaway!

The giveaway is over, and the winner is #39, Beth. She has been emailed.

Hello and welcome to my day of the Island Batik Great Outdoors Blog Hop!

The month of August is a great time for outdoor life. In my part of the world the temperatures never get very high, but we had some record highs this year. This led to early berry picking, and I love taking hikes in the forest looking for wild blueberries and raspberries, and the occasional cloud berry. This resulted in quite the collection of jams and jellies in my basement.

Now at the end of August I can feel the fall coming, with crisp temperatures in the mornings. Winter is around the corner! One can almost feel the winter blues...

I'll show off what I made from the cool colors of the new London Calling collection from Island Batik.

(Fabrics used in the project and the items for the giveaway were all provided to me by Island Batik, Aurifil and Hobbs who are sponsors for the Island Batik 2018 Ambassadors.)

This is what I received in my "surprise" package from Island Batik.

Here are all 20 fabrics of the  London Calling line spread out on my porch in the sun. I received half yard cuts of the whole collection, in addition to two-yard cuts of two of the fabrics, one lighter and one darker.

The first thought that came to my mind when I opened the surprise package was sun-bleached and washed-out jeans.

My inspiration was a quilt I saw some time ago, that I unfortunately don't have a picture of. The blocks were made in a log cabin style.

The London Calling collection goes in shades of blue, from almost white to dark navy, with a few added golden tones.

Look how the blocks match my faded, old jeans! Most jeans are top stitched with some kind of orange thread. Orange goes very well with these blues, and I decided it would spruce up the quilt with some bright splotches spread across the top. I used the orange batik from the Paisley Dot Brights as the accent color.

The separate blocks were made in an improvisational style, I made the big ones 12.5" and the small ones 6.5". Then I puzzled them into a layout I was pleased with.

The photo session of the finished quilt was done in a recreational area/forest 15 minutes walk from my house.  This fairytale tree is a great backdrop for a quilt photo.

I used all the 20 different fabrics of London Calling in this quilt. In addition I also used the orange Paisley Dot Bright and a neutral, Milk Shake.

I enjoy very much hiking in this forest. The roots of the tree are amazing, it looks like the tree grows without soil, it is hugging the rock!

This is an area used a lot by kindergarten kids on short hikes, and it is a perfect spot for picnics. Look at the awesome "spine" made from a fallen tree. It is a great place to play.

A close-up picture of the quilt I have named Balance in Chaos. The quilt finishes at 36" x 48", and will later hang on the wall in my son's apartment.

Not only beautiful scenery in the photo shoot, I walked a few steps, turned 180 degrees and got this view of the power lines...

The quilt was pieced with white Aurifil 50wt thread, and quilted with various Aurifil threads of 50wt and 40wt, all provided in the Ambassador package I received this spring.

I used the lighter of the two-yard cuts for the backing, and a Batik Foundation called Smoke for binding.

The batting used is Hobbs Thermore that I received in my Ambassador package. I quilted it with horizontal lines of varying distance, in five different Aurifil thread colors, and in addition I added a variegated orange thread from Sulky. This mimics the top-stitch thread on jeans, and adds extra life to the quilt.

Giveaway time: I am giving away a stack of 5" squares from London Calling, one from each of the 20 fabrics in the collection. In addition I am also including a little Dumpling  zipper pouch (made by me) with the dragonflies on the exterior.

To be included in the drawing follow my blog, either by Bloglovin or GFC, and leave a comment on what you would make with the squares.

The giveaway is open internationally, and I'll select a winner by random number drawing on Sept. 5th.

Wish Upon a Star Blog Hop

Thanks to Carol of Just Let Me Quilt for organizing this amazing blog hop!
There are 44 blog hoppers participating in this 5 days event.

Welcome to my stop in the first day of this blog hop.

My first entry is one of my favorites, the Double Stars skinny designed by Barbara Brackman. This design is from the book All in a Row by Moda All-Stars (the first edition). It is 48" long and difficult to photograph, so my birch tree is the perfect quilt stand.

I machine pieced this quilt and hand quilted each little block through several quilt guild meetings and during other spare moments. Very relaxing hand work!

The long and skinny quilt hanging in my wintery apple tree.

The snow is long gone now, as I prepared this blog post some weeks ago before leaving for a trip.

The second entry is my newest table runner. This design is originally by Anne-Pia Godske Rasmussen, but the Norwegian designer AnnAKa made her own version. This is appropriate for winter and the time before Christmas.

I quilted the table runner with an all-over geometric design, with thread matching the background. The stars were also outlined with with white thread.

The quilting shows off well on the back of the runner.

Visit the other bloggers today to see their starry creations!
