Spooky Sampler

Last year I participated in the Spooky Sampler quilt along where nine amazing quilters provided free blocks for the sampler. It was scheduled to be finished by Halloween 2023, but I was too busy at that time so I saved the patterns to make it for this year, instead.

The quilt was finished long time before the spooky season starts. It is a colorful and not so scary quilt. Each block is 15" square. I free motion quilted the blocks with a spiderweb design, using Aurifil thread 2600, Dove. The silvery thread thread mimics the spiderweb very well.

The backing is a fun print from Ikea from 2016. Binding is a multi colored stripey fabric bought at Hancock Fabrics more than 10 years ago. Finished size of the quilt is approx. 56" square.

The super cute (and spooky) quilt will be sent off to a little boy.

Jelly Roll Race Quilt for Charity

This quilt started as a demo for my quilt guild of how to make a Jelly Roll Race quilt. I didn't use a jelly roll, but cut 2.5" strips from my stash in an attempt to reduce my stash. Random yellom fabric squares/rectangles were added in between the strips.

The backing is a duvet cover I had in my stash. As you can see in the next photo this inspired the quilting design I used.

It may be a little difficult to see, but I upscaled the design from the backing print for the FMQ on the quilt.

Finished size of the quilt is 53" x 64", quilted by myself. Binding is a dark brown solid.

This is my third charity quilt for the year 2024, and number 108 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Jelly Roll Color Wash Quilt

This is the Jelly Roll Color Wash Quilt I made this spring, but didn't make a blog post until now. I had this great jelly roll from Island Batik that was perfect for this quilt. It reminds me of a beach sceneary.

Tutorial by Bethanne Nemesh, @bethanne.whitearbor on Instagram.

It is a small throw size of 48" x 57". Silk batting from Hobbs Batting inside, which makes it light weight, yet warm.

I used an old Ikea piece I had in my stash for backing.

Here's a detailed shot of the organic quilting using the walking foot and Aurifil 50wt Dove thread. The striped binding is the icing on the cake.

Traditional Patchwork Quilt for Charity

This year's first charity quilt is a traditional patchwork quilt. It consists mostly of donated fabrics. It's quilted with a wavy crosshatch design.

The backing is pieced from a cute Debbie Mumm paper doll panel. Finished size is 42" x 54".

This is my first charity quilt for the year 2024, and number 106 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Modern HST Sampler Quilt

In January 2016 I joined the Modern HST Sampler QAL hosted by Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts. By the end of that year all 24 blocks were made. I used the fabric line Good Neighbors by Crazy Mom Quilts in the quilt, all 36 different fabrics, with solid light grey as background.

The blocks were put aside because I didn't feel the quilt top was big enough. Later I discovered a great idea by a fellow Instagrammer to add a double, scrappy row of 2.5" squares all way round the  top, using leftover fabric from the line. The final stitches in the top were sewn September 2020.

The finished top was then nicely folded and put aside in favor of other pressing projects.

In spring this year my quilt guild announced a UFO lottery, and I entered with my Modern HST Sampler quilt. I had to piece a backing, quilt it and sew the binding on, and it had to be finished within the September guild meeting this week.

I managed as you can see!

The backing fabric wasn't wide enough, but by adding 5" strips of leftover fabric it became an interesting backing. I splurged and used wool batting because it will be my own personal quilt!

I quilted it with FMQ in a flame design, inspired by Christina of @afewscraps. The wool batting shows off the quilting in a very nice way, and as a bonus the quilt is extra warm. And the icing on the cake is striped binding for the win!

Now I can cross off another finished project with this great quilt of 54" x 80"! Just more than 7.5 years in the making...

Mini Plaid-ish Quilt

When Erica of Kitchen Table Quilting announced the Mini Plaid-ish QAL I just had to join. In 2020 I made the original Plaid-ish quilt (an adjusted size) in red tones .

This time I chose a more colorful scheme.

Outdoor pictures are always the best, and the uprooted tree is a trusted quilt holder. Finished quilt is 50" x 64".

A colorful quilt in contrast with a fairy tale tree. This tree is still alive, even though there's not much soil underneath.

I pieced the backing from three different fabrics. The elephant/monkey piece is very fitting since the quilt will be donated as a charity quilt to the children's ward at my local hospital.

Look at all those gorgeous colors! The binding is also scrappy.

In making a plaid-ish quilt it is very important to sort the fabrics by value, light, medium and dark. The best way to check this is to take black/white pictures, because sometimes bright colors may have a pretty light value, if you compare the two last pictures.

This is my ninth charity quilt for the year 2023, and number 101 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Portland Quilt

My second quilt finish for 2023 is the Portland Quilt by Kate at @seaminglykate. This is a free pattern at her website.

The quilt is a good lap size of 54" square. Fabrics are from the line Birchtree Lane from Connecting Threads, in addition to white solid in the sashing. All fabrics from my stash.

Pictures were taken on a cold winter day with my trustworthy quilt holder DH holding it up.

The pieced backing in green tones.

I had lots of fun free motion quilting with Aurifil thread.

FMQ on my domestic sewing machine with a white loopy border in the sashing, and stars and loops in the print areas with a thread color blending in.

The whole quilt laid out on my deck. Binding is a matching blue print.

This is my second charity quilt for the year 2023, and number 94 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Cars Quilt

The sewing and quilting year started with this small children's quilt for the hospital. The starting point was the Disney Cars fabric that I cut into blocks, and then I added blocks in a dark red solid and a red gingham.

The backing is a red flannel with multicolored stripes. The blue binding completed the quilt. Finished size is 36" x 42".

This is my first charity quilt for the year 2023, and number 93 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Bitty Blocks Discovered

When I was tidying my sewing space I discovered a bunch of these tiny blocks that were a part of a free sew along hosted by Quilting Daily. I think it started in 2015. I didn't keep up with the sew along, other projects stole my attention.

If  I had completed the sew along of these Bitty Blocks it would have resulted in a scrappy twin size quilt. Well, I didn't make that. So, what to do with the blocks? Why not make a charity quilt for the hospital? A few new blocks had to be made to get the quilt to a decent size.

I added white sashing in between the blocks in addition to a white border to even it out. A green print border completed the quilt top.

Frankenbatting was used in the quilt sandwich. It is quilted with vertical wavy lines. To finish the quilt I used leftover binding pieces from other projects. Finished size of the quilt is 34" x 42".

A truly scrappy project!

This is my ninth charity quilt for the year 2022, and number 88 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Ballerina Star

Meet my latest charity quilt, the Ballerina Star!

It started with the ballerina fabric to the left. Tiny ballerinas in colorful tutus dancing all over the stars. Not enough of this fabric made it necessary to add the  matching moon/stars fabric to the right. Sawtooth stars were made from these fabrics, there were enough for nine ballerina stars and six moon stars.

I added squares of a dusty purple speckled with tiny hearts to separate the stars. All fabrics were from my stash.

I decided to do some all-over free motion quilting on this quilt, it was a great practice! I chose the design Mod Clamshell by Angela Walters. The quilting was done with Aurifil thread #3660 Bubblegum.

Here's another detailed picture of the quilting.

The finished quilt laid out on my deck. Finished size is 40" x 48", this will be a great quilt for a little girl.

This is my third charity quilt for the year 2022, and number 82 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Fat Eighth Flapjacks Quilt

Looking for free patterns for my charity quilts I came over this one from Fat Quarter shop:
the Fat Eighth Flapjacks Quilt . It is originally designed for a Fat Eighth bundle, but it also works perfectly with scraps.

This resulted in a colorful quilt with lots of fun and interesting scrap pieces.

The weather cooperated so that I could take an outdoor picture.

The backing is a duvet cover, and the quilting is a simple crosshatch.
Finished size of the quilt is 55" x 65".

This is my fifteenth charity quilt for the year 2021, and number 79 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Blue/Green Charity Quilt

Another charity quilt is made. This time I used fabrics from only one fabric line, that's pretty unusual for me. I made an "old-fashioned" patchwork quilt from 18 different fabrics from Birchtree Lane by Connecting Threads, a line from 2015 according to the selvedge.

A simple patchwork layout looks great with the many different prints of birds, leaves and feathers together with blenders.

The uprooted tree is always a trustworthy quilt holder.

Dimension of the finished quilt is 48" x 60". Quilted with wobbly lines using the walking foot.

We have been blessed with fairly warm weather this October, so the forest is still green even though the leaves have fallen off the trees.

This is my twelfth charity quilt for the year 2021, and number 76 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Keep on quilting!
