Spooky Sampler

Last year I participated in the Spooky Sampler quilt along where nine amazing quilters provided free blocks for the sampler. It was scheduled to be finished by Halloween 2023, but I was too busy at that time so I saved the patterns to make it for this year, instead.

The quilt was finished long time before the spooky season starts. It is a colorful and not so scary quilt. Each block is 15" square. I free motion quilted the blocks with a spiderweb design, using Aurifil thread 2600, Dove. The silvery thread thread mimics the spiderweb very well.

The backing is a fun print from Ikea from 2016. Binding is a multi colored stripey fabric bought at Hancock Fabrics more than 10 years ago. Finished size of the quilt is approx. 56" square.

The super cute (and spooky) quilt will be sent off to a little boy.

Keep on quilting!

Modern HST Sampler Quilt

In January 2016 I joined the Modern HST Sampler QAL hosted by Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts. By the end of that year all 24 blocks were made. I used the fabric line Good Neighbors by Crazy Mom Quilts in the quilt, all 36 different fabrics, with solid light grey as background.

The blocks were put aside because I didn't feel the quilt top was big enough. Later I discovered a great idea by a fellow Instagrammer to add a double, scrappy row of 2.5" squares all way round the  top, using leftover fabric from the line. The final stitches in the top were sewn September 2020.

The finished top was then nicely folded and put aside in favor of other pressing projects.

In spring this year my quilt guild announced a UFO lottery, and I entered with my Modern HST Sampler quilt. I had to piece a backing, quilt it and sew the binding on, and it had to be finished within the September guild meeting this week.

I managed as you can see!

The backing fabric wasn't wide enough, but by adding 5" strips of leftover fabric it became an interesting backing. I splurged and used wool batting because it will be my own personal quilt!

I quilted it with FMQ in a flame design, inspired by Christina of @afewscraps. The wool batting shows off the quilting in a very nice way, and as a bonus the quilt is extra warm. And the icing on the cake is striped binding for the win!

Now I can cross off another finished project with this great quilt of 54" x 80"! Just more than 7.5 years in the making...

Keep on quilting!

Elroy Quilt

Earlier this year I was lucky to be chosen for pattern testing of the Elroy Quilt by Megan of Modern Moon Quilt Studio. I chose to make only four blocks which is perfect for a baby quilt. The simple reason for this was that my nephew and his wife were expecting a baby boy. Now the baby is here and I have sent the quilt to the new owner.

The pattern is a modern geometric design. I used batiks from Island Batik for the front. I love the bright and bold colors!

I quilted it with FMQ in a flame design on my domestic sewing machine using variegated Aurifil thread in color #4652.

The backing is a fun print with birds and leaves, called Birchtree Lane from Connecting Threads. It is a great fabric for the baby boy to focus on when he gets a little bit older.

The quilt went through a wash/dryer cycle which made it nice and cuddly. Perfect for a newborn baby boy!

Keep quilting!

Portland Quilt

My second quilt finish for 2023 is the Portland Quilt by Kate at @seaminglykate. This is a free pattern at her website.

The quilt is a good lap size of 54" square. Fabrics are from the line Birchtree Lane from Connecting Threads, in addition to white solid in the sashing. All fabrics from my stash.

Pictures were taken on a cold winter day with my trustworthy quilt holder DH holding it up.

The pieced backing in green tones.

I had lots of fun free motion quilting with Aurifil thread.

FMQ on my domestic sewing machine with a white loopy border in the sashing, and stars and loops in the print areas with a thread color blending in.

The whole quilt laid out on my deck. Binding is a matching blue print.

This is my second charity quilt for the year 2023, and number 94 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Keep on quilting!

Solstice Sampler 2022

This quilt is the result of a sew-along hosted by Amber of @alderwoodstudio. I started the first block in October and finished the quilt two days before New Years Eve.

Nine designers made these wonderful blocks, it was a joy to make them.

The weather late December doesn't always cooperate for a photo shoot, but this day was just perfect!

The quilt consists of nine 18" blocks designed by awesome artists. I enjoyed making all the beautiful blocks.

With a size of 60" square the quilt will be a great addition to my home.

The backing complements the colors on the front.

A closer look of the quilt on my porch.

An indoor picture of the quilt shows the organic quilting I made using Aurifil thread in white #2021.

I mostly used fabrics from Island Batik for the quilt.

This was a very pleasant quilt-along with a great-looking result!

Keep on quilting!

First Finish in 2019

My first finish for this year is the mystery quilt-along I joined as 2018 turned into 2019. Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams hosted the week long mystery/QAL, and the result was this great-looking, scrappy wall hanging/table runner.

I dug into my scraps for this project, cut lots of 2.5" squares, and had lots of fun piecing this wall hanging. It was a great, little break from piecing my January ambassador quilt. I free-motion quilted the wall hanging with matching colors, and it will be a great addition to my sewing room wall.

Keep on quilting!

Whimsical and Wonky with Island Batik

Welcome to the reveal of my Island Batik project for December, her name is Sister Square. Here she is in a very appropriate setting, outside a barn in my neighborhood.

Sorry about the poor natural light, but the outside pictures were taken at the darkest day of the year when we have least amount of daylight, just a couple of hours.

All the fabrics, thread and batting for this project were generously provided by Island Batik and their industry sponsors Aurifil and Hobbs.

The theme for the December Ambassador project was Whimsical and Wonky, and I knew right from the start what I was going to make. The inspiration was this Square Cow that I made in 2014, a little mug rug of 7"x 8" for a blog hop. She has now gotten a BIG SISTER!

The starting point for my project was a pattern from a book by Mary Lou Weidman and Melanie Bautista McFarland: Out Of The Box With Easy Blocks.

I gathered leftover fabrics from several earlier Island Batik projects in addition to the gorgeous new Check It Out batik that I received in three different colors of in the Ambassador box in July.

The made fabric for the body of the big sister is an improvisation with Check It Out in dark blue and Paisley Dot Brights in matching colors. I kept straight straight angles in the piecing to stay in line with the squares of the Check It Out fabric, and she IS a square cow, right!

The background is a neutral batik called Milk Shake. It is a difficult fabric to take pictures of, it looks completely solid here, but it really has lots of structure. I used a green batik from Southern Blooms for the grass, and Batik Foundations  and various leftovers for the rest of the cow. All the piecing was done with white Aurifil thread.

I used Hobbs Tuscany Cotton Wool Blend batting in the quilt sandwich, and that was a dream to quilt with. For the quilting I used several different Aurifil threads to match the fabric, actually more colors than showed in the picture above.

The main photo shoot had to be taken around the neighborhood farm, which creates perfect surroundings for a domestic animal like a square cow, right?!

In the winter season tractors are used to clear off snow, but Big Sister is still willing to pose next to it.

Big Sister, or her name is actually Sister Square, is relaxing in the snow. You can see the texture of the quilting better if you enlarge the picture.

Here Sister Square is posing on my living room floor. The real colors are better reproduced in the indoor pictures in winter time, the snow background "steals" the depth of the colors.

She finished at approximately 43" x 46" after quilting.

I had a ball quilting this piece, starting with micro stippling her name, Sister Square, in the negative space. Then I did a lot of free motion quilting, of boxes in her body, swirls in her head, and continued with walking foot quilting on her ears and legs.

The background is further quilted with leaves and swirls, pebbles, and a meander in the border. All the quilting is done by myself, and it was a great exercise!

The binding is the green Check It Out batik, it looks fabulous!

Look at the eyes with the gorgeous eyelashes!

Sister Square was also fed properly, the hay is made of Batik Foundations run through bias tape maker.

The wind wanted to show off  the backing of the quilt, too. Sister Square had a great time in the photo shoot, she felt at home!

Log Cabin Challenge

Here is my November project for the Island Batik Ambassador program, it is my own design and I call it Logs With A Twist.

The November challenge for the Island Batik Ambassadors were Cozy Cabins, where we should incorporate a log cabin block or log cabin variations in our project, 36"x36" or larger.

I used the 2.5" strip set of Vintage Morris that was provided in the Ambassador package from Island Batik, along with matching yardage. In addition I used solids in black, white and grey.

The quilt blocks were pieced with Aurifil 50wt in white 2024, in a traditional log cabin design. The inner squares were cut 5" and 2.5", respectively . I did all my quilt math in the old fashioned way, on paper, as shown above.

I made the log cabin blocks in two different sizes, 16" and 8" finished. The bigger blocks are made with the full width of strips, and the smaller blocks with 1.25" strips.

Vintage Morris blends in with the surroundings perfectly. The fall colors of the collection are beautiful, but personally they would not be my first choice for a quilt. But it is nice to work outside my comfort zone once in a while.

I like how the copper color of the outer part of the big blocks twist its way around the quilt, while the inner smaller blocks are calming down the design.

When assembling the quilt sandwich I used Britten Nummer from Ikea as my backing fabric, and Warm&White cotton batting. Before quilting my quilt top measured 48" x 64".

Here is the finished quilt hanging on my porch wall, with the next to naked birch trees in the background.

I did extended search to decide on the quilting design, and finally settled on a leaf and swirl combination, inspired by Angela Walters' YouTube videos.

I did the quilting on my domestic sewing machine with 50 wt thread in Silver from Connecting Threads.

The binding is made of leftover strips cut down to 2.25" width. The scrappy binding adds extra life to the quilt.

Thanks to Island Batik and Aurifil for providing fabric and thread for this project.
