Baby Quilt For A Very Special Girl

Finally I can show this quilt here after the baby girl is born and the quilt has been gifted!

The design is called 'Crossing Canoes', and I was fortunate enough to be able to cut out the block pieces with my Accuquilt cutter.

25 'Crossed Canoes' blocks  makes up a quilt of 44" square, before wash and dry cycle. It is quilted by myself in a heart and loops FMQ design.

The quilt back is very interesting, it is pieced by 11 different pieces of  'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' fabric. This quilt back may be even more popular than the front for the little baby girl!

Chinese Lunar Year of the Tiger

February 1st we are entering the Year of the Tiger.

Berene of @happysewlucky has designed this great FPP block (8" unfinished) that I just had to make. After some fussy cutting for the eyes and snout, I found this awesome 'scratchy' fabric for the nose, it really looks like he's been in a fight!

The block will be kept in my drawer until I find the right project to put it into.

Aurifil DOM Block November

This month's Aurifil Designer of the Month, Jenni Smith, has designed this cute Poppy block.

I made my version in different reds from my stash.

Charity Quilt for November

My charity quilt for November is made from 4.5" squares of vintage-looking fabrics where the main fabric features Petite Odile by French General for ModaFabrics.

I cut 142 squares of the available fabrics with my AccuquiltGo! cutter with very little waste, and ended up using 140 of them in the quilt. Simple crosshatch quilting adds to the vintage look.

It was a grey, snow-filled day for the photo shoot, the first day of real snow this season.

I added a fun strip of teddy bears to the striped fabric on the backing for interest. The binding is a striped fabric that matches the colors on the front.

Finished size is approximately 40"x56".

This is my charity quilt number thirteen for the year, and number 42 all time for the children's ward at the hospital.

Keep on quilting!

Aurifil DOM Block October

The Aurifil Designer Of The Month for October, Alyce Blyth from @blossomheartquilts, has designed the AdventCalendarBlock.

I made my version in bright batiks from Island Batik, the line is called Southern Blooms. These colors may be more appropriate for the summer climate in Australia during Advent than the cold in the northern hemisphere. Bright colors make people happy!

Aurifil DOM blocks for July, August and September

I have made a few of the Aurifil Designer of the Month blocks over the years, and have completed several annual quilts. This year I started sewing in July, and my third block is now done.

The July block is designed by Carl Hentsch, and is paper pieced. This one was made when I was away on vacation.

The August block is designed by Karen Miller. It was real fun to make the 3D flowers, they look like carnations!

The September block is designed by Lissa Alexander. All the blocks are 12.5" unfinished.

Sewing these blocks in between other projects is very relaxing, and I enjoy it very much.

Keep sewing and quilting!

More 2018 Aurifil Designer of the Month Blocks

Here are more Aurifil DOM blocks that I have made lately. First out is the February block Birch Ball by Scott Hansen.

Second is the July block, Beach Houses by Sherri McConnell.

Finally is the August block, Rooftops of Amsterdam by Rebecca Bryan.

Let's see if I can get caught up with the rest of the blocks...

2018 Aurifil June Block

Kerry Goulder is the Aurifil designer of the month for June. She designed a block featuring a sea turtle. Here is my interpretation.

2017 Aurifil November Block

The November block is designed by Heather Givans of Crimson Tate, and is called Tall Trees. The trees are built of thirty tiny flying geese in different shades of green.

It is tricky to make the small flying geese with a finished size of 1" x 1/2". In the process of putting them together to form trees they turned out a little bit wonky, but that's OK.

2017 Aurifil October Block

The October block is designed by Helen Stubbings and is a really beautiful block. The original is made in green tones, but I chose to do my block in another color scheme.

Everything in this block is hand stitched, both the embroidery in a variegated grey floss and the english paper pieced frame in colorful batiks. I love the background fabric for this piece, it gives another dimension to the block!

I had a great time making this block, it is so nice to do some slow stitching, it is really calming you down and relieving stress.

Keep on stitching!

2017 Auril BOM Block for March

This is my version of the block Scraptastic Stars designed by Melissa Corry. I dug into my scrap bins of green and blue, and that resulted in this beauty of a 12.5" unfinished block.

This Year's Last Bee Block(s)

This year I have very much enjoyed being a part of one of the BeeHive groups organized by Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts. Our group, the Beehiveinterquiltinentials, with members from three continents have had a fun time making blocks for each other.

My month was September, and I received a bunch of blocks as decribed in this post . I will have to make a few more blocks to make a decent size quilt, but I haven't had the time to do it yet. My problem is that I committed to way too many projects and BOMs during the year. My first priority for 2017 is to complete this quilt.

For the month of December, Ileana chose the Wanta Fanta block in off white and dusty blue tones, florals or geometric prints. I had several prints of the right colors, so I went straight to work and made her block. When I had made one, I couldn't stop, and had to make another one. Below you can see the two blocks.

I know that Ileana is going to assemble these blocks into a beautiful quilt!

2016 Aurifil November Block

This month's Aurifil block is designed by  Kim Niedzwiecki and it is called Geese Tracks.

This is the first quilt I am making that is mainly in two colors. Now there is only one block left to make before we get the block setting layout.

I laid out the blocks on my porch on this cold November day to get some rather poor daylight for the photo session. Thankfully there is no snow yet.

Keep on quilting!

Modern HST Sampler - Third Quarter

The third quarter of the Modern HST Sampler quilt along is passed, so it is time to show off six more blocks, #13-18:

I am getting to be an expert in half square triangles in this quilt along. Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts are showing us several different ways to make HSTs, and I think the designs from Alyce and other designers are beautiful. My favorite so far is the one on the bottom left in the picture above, Whirly-Gig designed by Keera Job.

I have made two more blocks, so here are all the 20 made until now. Just 4 left to go!

I am using Good Neighbors fabric by Amanda Jean Nyberg of Crazy Mom Quilts, with an aqua/grey solid in the background. I love the look of the blocks!

2016 Aurifil September block

Here is my version of the Aurifil block for September, Into the Blue designed by Katarina Roccella. It is perfectly acceptable with a few fall leaves for decoration.

Happy quilting!

Long neglected blog...

My blog has been sadly neglected the last few months. I will try to change that and write blog posts more regularly.

In my last post I promised to show off my Modern HST Sampler blocks. These are the 17 blocks that are published so far. Thanks to Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts for organizing this skill building QAL.

I am using an aqua/grey solid together with the full range of Good Neighbors fabric by Amanda Jean Nyberg of Crazy Mom Quilts. Only seven more blocks to make!

With all the more or less complicated blocks I am making this year, I just needed a simple patchwork project to "relax" with. I have a few fabric bundles I will make charity quilts with, and here is one of them. This one contained a few panels, so I just cut  6 1/2" squares and will sew the blocks together to make a quick charity quilt.

The fall is so pretty now: this is a picture taken by my son. Look at those yellow and green leaves against the blue concrete wall; I love the colors of September!

Keep on quilting!

Blocks, Blocks and More Blocks

This is the year for blocks, and I have joined 4 different "BOMs" with a bigger or lesser workload.

The Splendid Sampler comes out with free blocks  twice a week, and when we are finished we will have made 100 6 1/2" blocks unfinished. Above are blocks 30 - 37, in a wide range from simple piecing, intricate embroidery, applique, curved piecing and English Paper Piecing. We get to practice a lot of techniques!

The 2016 Aurifil Designer of the Month June block is Modern Delft II by Jacquelynne Steves. She designed two different versions of the block, where #1 had stitchery in the center block as well as in the four white corner blocks. I chose to make the alternative version of this 12 1/2" unfinished block.

Maybe I will prepare the stitchery project to bring with me on summer vacation, since I won't have access to a sewing machine.

The June block in the Sugar Block Club is Maple Stack, a modern version of the classic Maple Leaf block. I love the boldness of these blocks, and for this particular one I am very pleased with the blueberry fabric! These blocks are the same size as the Aurifil blocks.

I am also making blocks for my Modern HST Sampler, but that will be shown in a separate post. Enough blocks for now...

Keep on quilting!

Neglected Sugar Block Club...

Well, that is not completely true. The three blocks for March, April and May were made in their respective months, but I have not shown them off on my blog.

Here they are in chronological order, all designed by Amy Gibson.

March: Orange Peel, a combination of piecing and applique.

April: Ohio Star.

May: Morning Star, paper pieced.

The last block  consists of a purple solid that doesn't photograph well, and Texture Spectrum from Robert Kaufman in the star points as the focal points.

Apart from creating multiple blocks for various QALs, I have also completed my project for the Opposites Attracts blog hop hosted by Marian of Seams to be Sew. The blog hop starts on Wednesday, June 1. I hope you will join me, there will be giveaways!
