First Finish From the Q3 List

This is the resulting table runner I made after having tested the Mod Citrus pattern for Sew Kind of Wonderful. Using the Quick Curve Ruler to make the orange peel blocks is a smart technique, avoiding doing them in applique.

I quilted the green leaves with my walking foot, and I love the echoing texture. The orange flower was free motion quilted with pebbles around the edges. The background has dense stippling to make the orange peel blocks stand out.

This is the first finish from my 2017 FAL Q3 list .

2017 Finish-A-Long :: Q3 List

Last quarter I only managed to finish one of the projects on my list. Let's see whether I can increase that number this time from my Q3 Finish-A-Long list.

My first goal is continued from the first quarter, and is to assemble the 24 blocks of the Modern HST Sampler, add a border and quilt it.

Goal number two is to make a quilt out of these Bee blocks from last year. I will need to make a few extra blocks to get a decent sized quilt.

The third and last goal is to finish the quilting of this table runner, and put the binding on it.
I was lucky to be one of the pattern testers for the Mod Citrus pattern by Sew Kind of Wonderful, and I chose to make a table runner of my test blocks.

2017 Finish A Long - Goals for Second Quarter

Today is the last day to link up goals for 2017 FAL Q2. Last quarter I finished 2 projects on my list out of four, a 50% completion rate is not too bad! There are always popping up other projects that pushes their way through!

For this quarter I will continue trying to finish the last two projects on my list from Q1 and add a few more.

My first goal is continued from the first quarter, and is to assemble the 24 blocks of the Modern HST Sampler, add sashing and quilt it.

Last year I joined a Quilting Bee, and these are the resulting bee blocks I have for my quilt. I will make a few more Houndstooth Blocks to make a decent quilt size. The backing fabric is already chosen, and I look forward to finishing the quilt. This is my second goal.

My third goal is to assemble all the blocks I made for the Splendid Sampler into one (or two) quilts. The picture shows my first 65 blocks, more blocks have been made.

The fourth and last goal on my Q2 list is this skinny/table runner. This is a project from the Moda All Stars All in a Row book, and the row is designed by Brenda Riddle. The row is actually too long to fit on my table, so I think it will end up as a skinny on the wall.

My proposed goals are linked up to one the official 2017 FAL host blogs here .

First Finish in 2017

This table runner has the honor of being my first finish this year. It is made completely from my stash. The fall colors of the runner matches the bare branches of my berry bush.

It is a very strange winter, 5-6 days ago we had a huge snowfall and now (almost) all of it is rained away! The very mild climate is not how it is supposed to be at this time. The only advantage is that I can use my porch and yard as a photo studio.

The back of the runner is a graphic print from Ikea.

This is my first finish of the 2017 Finish-A-Long.

2017 Finish A Long - Goals Q1

Another year, another time to list goals for completing my projects this quarter. The list is a great incentive and motivation to finish items that have been waiting to be finished a longer or shorter time. For the first quarter I have chosen to list projects where the blocks were finished in the last months of 2016.

My first goal is to assemble the 24 blocks of the Modern HST Sampler, add sashing and quilt it.

The second goal is to do the same with the 2016 Aurifil blocks. This will be a little smaller quilt, only 12 blocks here.

Last year I joined a Quilting Bee, and these are the resulting bee blocks I have for my quilt. I will make a few more Houndstooth Blocks to make a decent quilt size. The backing fabric is already chosen, and I look forward to finishing the quilt. This is my third goal.

The fourth and last goal on my Q1 list is this table runner. The top is pieced, and it only needs batting, backing and quilting.

For a Newborn Baby Boy

I had great hopes of finishing this baby quilt before the little baby boy was due May 1st, but it was finished a little overdue. I don't think he would mind, though. I took the quilt with me for a photo shoot on an unusual location for me. It was a glorious day with sunshine making the sea glitter, but alas, a pretty heavy wind.

It was kind of difficult to get good pictures of the quilt on this playground since I didn't have any helpers with me.

The wind really "nailed" it to the net on the playground.

Indoor pictures with with lots of daylight from skylights.

This is the back of the quilt, I used the fabric Nattljus from Ikea, it gives a very nice optical illusion, and is kind of straining on the eyes if you look at it too long.

The quilt looks good both on rocks and grass.

A detail picture of the quilting. Straight line quilting with walking foot in the colored blocks, and I tried to make the grey blocks a little more interesting with changing directions of the lines. For the sashing I practiced my FMQ skills with strings of pearls.

The pattern didn't have sashing in-between the blocks, but I added a light print. When it came to the corner stones, I felt that the quilt didn't have enough color, so I added yellow fabric from an old shirt. It turned out to be a perfect "crayon box".

What better to end this long session with a picture from my neighborhood  playground?

(And yes, the quilt will be washed before it is gifted).

2016 Finish-A-Long - My List for Q2

For the first quarter of the 2016 Finish-A-Long I reached two of my four goals. This quarter I hope for at least one more.  Here are my four goals:

My first goal is to add a border to this baby quilt, quilt it and put a fancy binding on it. The baby in question is due May 1st, so I have to keep up speed to get it finished!

Goal #2 is to get this table runner, or skinny, quilted and bound. I pieced this one during the All-In-A-Row QAL hosted by Martingale earlier this spring. I never managed to get it quilted, though. Now is the time to finish this skinny designed by Barbara Brackman.

Goal #3 is to transform this jelly roll of Ambleside by Brenda Riddle into a stunning lap quilt using a tutorial by Stacey Day.

And again, I am putting up Love Squared as my 4th and last goal. I hope I will get time to complete the quilt this time, but I will be happy if I only get to piece the quilt top.

First Finish in 2016

Winter has finally come full blast with lots of snow. The blue light in the short days of winter is a good backdrop for my Color Me Happy quilt, all in a cold palette.

The quilt is made from a stack of 40 so-called Turnovers, or triangles. I can understand why this pre-cut has not gained any widespread popularity, since I had this stack in my shelves for a couple of years before I got inspired to use it.

I added solid stripes of 1 1/2" width in a contrasting color in between the triangles, sewed it together and squared it up to 10". Then I cut 10" squares in grey, light blue and white. I love the colors, they fit so well together!

The arrangement of the blocks are kind of random, and I like the way the contrasting stripes makes a kind of zig-zag path across the quilt.

I have not photo-shopped the pictures, because I like the natural light an overcast day has in the middle of a snow filled winter. An indoor shot of the quilt and more quilting details can be found in this post.

I used a leftover piece of Britten Nummer (from Ikea) for the back. This quilt will be donated to the children's ward of my local hospital, and I like that the children can learn to count in English when they use the quilt.

This is my 11th charity quilt for the hospital. I hope it will bring some comfort to a sick child.

Here the quilt is spread out on a huge pile of snow outside my house. I can hardly imagine that there was no snow here two weeks ago!

The snow was nice and dry, so after the photo shoot I just just gave the quilt a nice shake, and all the snow came off.

The quilt will be washed and dried before it is donated.

This is my first finish for the 2016 Finish-A-Long. My original goal list is here.

This is also my first finish of a UFO in 2016. I had the stack of triangles for approximately two years until I got the courage to make something out of it. It is never too late!
